The first of the 10 steps to an income blog is to buy a domain name and hosting. You might say, step 1 and I already need money? Yes, unfortunately this is required spending and there is no way around it. The good news is that this is the only required spending and it is pretty cheap. With that link you get discounted hosting with a free domain name. I use Bluehost because they are cheap, easy to use, fast and their customer service is easy to reach and snappy. Not much more you can ask for.

Buying a domain name secures your place on the web. It’s the text you enter into your browser when you want to go to a website. Pick your name carefully as it could have effects on your search engine ranking. The three things to consider when buying your domain is:

  1. The domain extension. The general consensus among the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) community is that .com’s hold the most weight and look the most professional.
  2. EMD (Exact Match Domains) are also important. For example, a new site at www.knittedcatsweaters.com will more likely show up in a search for “Knitted Cat Sweaters” than www.sweatersforkittens.com. While this is a factor it is not overly important. It could help in the beginning stages of your site.
  3. Another factor is domain length. Evidence suggests that the length of the domain can also affect search rankings so do not get carried away and go with something like www.handknittedsweatersforkittens.com

Your domain is only half of the equation. The domain name is just an address but unless you have a plot to build on it is useless. This is where hosting comes in. Hosting is where your website is going to live. Where the data, text and images are stored and served to the people accessing your site. You do not have to buy your domain name and hosting in the same place but luckily Bluehost does both making it really easy to manage the ground floor of your site.

Once you have the domain name and hosting sorted out for your site, you are ready to proceed to step 2. Installing a platform to build on.
